Windows Naming Conventions

Please observe the following notes for proper synchronization of your files and folders with other operating systems:

Incompatible Characters in Windows

Avoid using characters in file names that are incompatible with the Windows file system:
CharacterDescription
/Forward slash
\Backslash
<Less than
>Greater than
:Colon
"Quotation mark
|Vertical bar or pipe
?Question mark
*Asterisk
.Period or space at the end of a file or folder name

Character Limit

In Windows, file and folder names can be up to 260 characters long. File and folder paths, however, can be up to 32,767 characters long, which is fully supported by AllSync. Windows Explorer, for example, can only display folder and file paths up to a path length of 260 characters. Use software such as FreeCommander if you want to view and edit folder and file paths longer than 260 characters.

Case Sensitivity Conflicts

In Windows, no files or folders with the same name can exist in a directory, even if they differ in case.
In most Linux distributions, files and folders with the same name can exist in a directory as long as they differ in case.
If you synchronize data between Windows and Linux, make sure that no files or folders with the same name exist in a directory on Linux, as this may cause files and folders to be mistakenly deleted or overwritten!
